  • Training on the pads?

When did pads first start to be used in boxing training by trainers?.. i cannot recall ever seeing trainers/fighters pre- 1990s using pads in their training camps. Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Leonard, Hearns etc did those fighters trainers use pads in training camp ?

    Repost from a previous thread:

Pads have been around since the 1950's. They weren't used as trainers believed they had limited teaching use.

They were originally used to work on a boxers flaw when executing a specific punch. They would then go back to the heavy bag and continue their training.

"They have fighters punch the hand pads - pop, pop, pop - and they put on a show and make a lot of noise that's impressive to the crowd and the media guys. But it's just a show for the most part. Very little is actually being taught."

Prior to pads being manufactured I used a pair of 20oz gloves reversed.
I used them to help form combination patterns and to teach how to finish the correct way.
When teaching a novice kid to box all trainers "show hands" with or without pads so you can direct a students punches properly. The actual methods goes back to the early days of boxing. The technique has changed a lot and the "show" aspect that most fans see is just a show however it can increase eye/hand sharpness for certain fighters who feel it does just that.

      Nothing new, very little is!
