  • Tyrell Biggs

Thought this guy was v talented.
    Gutsy effort v Tyson.
Tough oponents v tyson damiani bowe mason lewis.
Lost to them all when they were peak and unbeaten.
Looked a talented fighter before all that.
I heard he recovered from coke addiction early in pro career.
    84 gold medal winner.
Won a fight in 86 v Sims with one hand after breaking collat bone early.
Anyone any views news etc on this guy ?

I believe filmmakers still have hopes on releasing the documentary "Whatever Happened to Tyrrell Biggs" this year.

As a kid he was a very well known basketball player who was a star in the Philly area.
He was a very good amateur with huge wins over Domiani and Lewis with a bronze in the Pan Am's (I think) and then the gold in the Olympics!
I don't know if outside influences helped derail him as a pro or if he just couldn't get over once the competition was raised.
I think he lives in southern Calif. now and is doing well from articles I read years ago.
I know at one time in the amateurs that he was a presence to be dealt with, big kid who could move well for his size. I hope he's well.
      Ray.

Was a good boxer but I felt he was not ready for Tyson yet. Things got worse after that. A bit prone to cuts.

I agree about the Tyson part.. I think Biggs only had 14 or 15 fights before fighting Tyson in 87..
Him being a gold medalist and undefeated, they could have groomed him for a mega fight with Tyson had they just kept feeding him Tyson leftovers like berbick, pink, etc..
Biggs would have faired much better and gotten paid more if the Tyson fight happens in 1989 instead of 87

Biggs was addicted to ******* in his amateur days and celebrated his gold medal by using the drug. By his professional debut he was using crack.

A stint in rehab, that five month gap after his debut to second fight, brought about him being clean for the remainder of his career and I believe his life.

I have read that Biggs was considered damaged goods and that his backers wanted a big payday sooner rather than later, to ensure no surprise loses got in the way.

That makes sense,, cash him out early vs Tyson rather than wait and get some random loss or 2

At that time a Tyson fight was worth so much more money to his opponent than any other fight, almost nobody would turn down that opportunity.

True, but if you think Biggs was the goods, they wouldn't have rushed him.. They must have thought he wouldn't last and cashed him out..
A young undefeated gold medalist usually gets groomed.. You don't see Anthony Joshua getting a wlad fight next year..
But yes, landing a Tyson fight is the same as landing a Floyd fight today.. Hard to turn down the paycheck

If Golovkin brought in the kind of money that Tyson did, his phone would be ringing all day with challenges. The chance to make life changing money seems to make people somewhat braver.
