  • Only one Champion.

Why are almost all diehard boxing fans so in love with the idea of there being only one champion? It is taken for granted that having more than one champion is ridiculous, somehow contrary to the notion of what a champion is. However if you look at other sports you do not find one champion who stays the champion until he/she/they loses or retires. In Athletics you have Olympic and World champions every four and two years. In tennis you have up to four champions a year, the winners of the French, US, Australian Opens and Wimbledon. There is a similar situation in golf. Teams sports usually have multiple champions every season or year with often little regard for the determination of 'World' champions. In football (soccer) the top European teams put more value into becoming European Champions League winners than winning the World Club Cup. So in actual fact it is the idea that there should only be one champion and that that champion should stay the champion until he/she loses or retires that is actually quite strange.

    Any angry thoughts?

Because it's not fun explaining to someone why there's six world champions all in the same division.

Do tennis or golf fanatics get bored having to explain that there are four majors every year? Is it different?

Boxing doesn't operate like golf or tennis. If we're going to compare other sports, try football. How damn lame would it be if instead of the Superbowl we had four different parts and four different champion teams and the season just ended with no leader? Hence why we shouldn't compare this to other sports, it can change any minute.

You're declaring a number one champion of the entire world. The belt's open to all pro talent to take a shot, half the hunger and excitement is gone if one guy can just grab an alphabet strap, call himself champ and face weak opponents. This is why unifications should go down far more often.

All other sports have some sort of way for declaring who is champ. Team sports with seasons have playoffs...

Boxing just have random paper champs... In a one on one sport, there should always be a clear champ...

There is no American football world champion. American football is one of the worst sports to compare boxing to because few people outside the United States care about the sport.

Who is the world tennis or golf champion? They are world sports but they have four major tournaments a year. There is no one 'world' champion, there is a world ranked number one but that does not confer the same status in and of itself as winning one of the majors nor does it confer the title of 'world champion'.

Point is we shouldn't compare it to any other sports, albeit maybe MMA.

It's a one on one sport in a lone division, there's no Heavyweight A division then Heavyweight B division. Everyone's got their fair shot, why would the guy who works the hard and wins the belt be called one of the world champions? This is why so many bouts don't happen.

Sports certainly have a way of declaring a champion, but that champion is either one of many or they are champion for a limited period of time (one year/season or until the next World/Olympics comes around). Boxing diehards suggest a real champion is such until he/she loses.
