    Jimmy Ellis 1940-2014

Condolences to the friends and family of former WBA Heavyweight Champion Jimmy Ellis who passed away today at age 74. Ellis started as a middleweight and fought his way through a tough 8 man tournament to win the WBA title during Ali's ban. Ellis is mostly known for being Ali's sparring partner and being squashed by Joe Frazier, but he was a very good fighter and a classy guy.

He fought a lot of greats. I remember seeing his fight with Earnie Shavers.

Saddened, he was a gentleman and one of the true mentors that young men could follow. Terrific boxer and true competitor.

                    R.I.P Champ.
