  • Joe Frazier vs Monte Masters!

I had a copy of an article on Joe Frazier's announced comeback at age 37 in 1981, we all know he fought Floyd Cummings but a possible opponent being mention was somebody named Monte Masters. (John Tate was also mention and perceived as a dangerous foe for aging Joe).

I check out Master's record on boxingrecords.com until the time Frazier fought Cummings, he was 22-0 with 19 KOs against no-name opposition, somehow Larry Holmes didn't fight him when he remain unbeaten for 28 fights around 1983 when Larry was fighting guys with lesser fights.

How good was Masters, there's no video of his fights except a sparring match with Jerry Quarry.

Monte Masters was mid west product of Pat O'Grady(his father in law), the father of Sean. Masters had a built up record and was not very good.

After Sean O'Grady won the lightweight title the WBA wanted him to fight Claude Noel and Pat O'grady refused and dumped the WBA belt and started his own organization called the WAA. Masters got the WAA heavyweight title but was stripped when he divorced Pat O'Grady's daughter.
No, Masters was the Midwest version of Peter McNeeley, with built up record just like that.

O'Grady wouldn't let Masters fight someone like Scott Ledoux, much less a Larry Holmes.

Not really. Not even top 20.

The WBC would have probably ranked him.

We can always start a fantasy matchup thread featuring Masters vs:

            Butterbean
            McNeeley
            Too Tall Jones
            Bigfoot Martin

I would favor Everett Martin against the whole lot!

I agree he is much more like Peter McNeeley, I remember McNeeley had more first round knockouts than Mike Tyson.

Good thing Joe Frazier didn't fight him.
