  • Ricardo lopez vs michael carbajal

How come this fight never got made,,

I know lopez was primarily at 105, and carbajal was more of a flyweight, but it seems to me they were the biggest names at 112 or under, and both had long successful careers, and lopez moved up later in his career to 108,,

How come this fight never got made in the mid 90s,,, You would think that this would have been huge paydays for both guys, and probably would have set a long standing record for biggest purse at the super low weights,, Both guys probably could have made a million each...

How come this fight never got made, and who do you think wins

It took forever for Lopez to move up to 108, and not in time to face Carbajal. Also I know that Lopez was promoted by King, and I think Carbajal was with Top Rank. That always made things more difficult.

Finito's skills were better. Carbajal might have had too much of a size advantage though.

Either way it would have been awesome to see.

Your right,, Carbajal was with top rank for sure,,, Im not sure about lopez,,, but either way, why wouldnt king and arum not cash these guys out vs each other,,

Just way too much money involved considering there is not alot of high profile fights at those super low weights,,
It honestly could have been a ppv fight with the right undercard,, both fighters were extremely popular, and a fight in vegas, phoenix or texas would have done a huge gate,,

When you have two promoters with enormous egos who are used to micromanaging everything, you have a difficulty. King/Arum wasn't as bad as Top Rank/Goldenboy and they did collaborate from time to time, but it wasn't a friendly rivalry either.

I'm just guessing, but probably the money wasn't good enough because of their size to overcome these obstacles.

yeah your right about that,,, I just think if those guys made the tito-oscar fight which featured both guys putting up their cash cows, that they could somehow figure out a way to make lopez-carbajal...

At least tito and oscar had many more options when it came to massive paydays, and lopez and carbajal basically had each other to score huge money with..

Its a shame this fight never got made,,, I think carbajal pulls out a come from behind victory,,

            love me some carbajal

I prefer seeing this fight then even though I know Lopez was better than Carbajal, Finito also beat the one that KOs Humberto Gonzales.

One of my favorite fights was Lopez vs Nene Sanchez, who used to fight in Don King's undercards.

Carbajal was with King for awhile and then went back to Bob. It was a kerfuffle in like 94. I've spoken to people who say Lopez passed on a chance at the fight for whatever reason. Who knows?

Carbajal signed with King with the hopes that it would be signed but it never happened.

Lopez wasn't extremely popular at all. He was something for hardcore purist fans to fawn over and place in heir little p4p lists but he never received the same level of exposure or money that Carbajal made. There's a reason he spent a great chunk of his career on the undercards.

Someone with Lopez's footwork, who'd constantly force a plodder like Carbajal to reset, would probably win a comprehensive decision, but he never wanted the fight.
