Wow!... Ben Bolt, thanks for posting that vid..

I remember Johnny Owen, he was a freak of nature..
A 24 yr old man who only lived for boxing, from a mining community in the roughest part of Wales, never sipped a beer or kissed a girl.. Thin and pale, he turned his body into a cable.. Just couldn't add any extra bone to his skull.. Watching the video made me well up a couple of times.. Big credit to Pintor and his wife, they were truly superb.

Indeed, and to **** Owen and the family who forgave and accepted that these things can happen in boxing. According to wiki, "Owen’s family, far from blaming the World Champion, telegraphed him shortly after their loss and encouraged him to go on fighting".

I remember the fight very well, and its aftermath. The British Medical Association again called for a ban on boxing and now gained a great deal of listeners because of British middleweights being involved in incidents shortly before.
In 1978, Alan Minter victim Angelo Jacopucci died after their EBU encounter, and the following year New Yorker Willie Claasen died after being stopped by Wilford Scypion. Just one-and-a-half month earlier, Claasen had been KO’d by British champ Tony Sibson.

Absolutely... Did you ever see the first documentary?

I'm sure there was one made before he fought Pintor, documenting the rise of the Merthyr Matchstick.. Vividly remember, the child-like Owen, bashful at being asked about a girlfriend, his dislike of what beer tasted like, and the love of his mum's chocolate gateaux.. **** Owen and his wife, worshipped the ground Johnny walked on..
He said about the death, 'We weren't like father & son, it was something closer than that.' The bond of friendship the family then made with Pintor, all adds to a very poignant story.

Believe this tragedy played a fundamental part in the decision to end 15 rnd title fights.
