  • Great Bills in Obscure Places.

I'm mainly thinking 1970-2000 but all over the place is fine.

In the old days fights were wherever an enterprising chap had the balls & money to go for it. Shelby, Montana springs to mind.

But in the Vegas/Atlantic City Golden days it's fantastic to find fights dotted around America & the globe in places they wouldn't be expected.

    I stumbled across this today.

Crown Coliseum, Fayetteville, North Carolina, USA
Billy Costello W Juan Laporte SD 10
Larry Holmes W James Smith TKO 8
Tim Witherspoon L Greg Page RTD 7

Six ex champs in that small town on the same bill.

    Any others like this?

Loved some of the 'Big Top circus tent' fights we used to get in the UK.

Terry Marsh won the world light-welterweight title against Joe Manley in a borrowed Big Top pitched in Basildon, Essex. Benn and Watson had a fantastic fight in Finsbury Park in another hired tent.

Steve Collins had a couple of world title fights - most noticeably his showdown with Eubank when he spooked Chris - in a middle of nowhere village called Millstreet (population 1500 according to wiki) in what I seem to remember was actually a horse show-jumping arena.

    No wonder Eubank got spooked.

That's right, it was the same Basildon tent they'd set up as Tim Witherspoon's training camp, the year before when he defended his WBA strap against Frank Bruno at Wembley..

And yes, Collins Eubank in a field.. Collins really got to him.. He had the mind games planned to a tee, right down to the most haunting of Irish folk music, played at ear piercing levels, that totally drowned out Eubank's 'simply the best' routine.
