Eddie machen was, in fact, incarcerated as a young man. Read "Education of a Felon" by Edward Bunker. He did time with Machen, who was bully for the guards.

Dwight Muhammad Qawi (then Dwight Braxton) spent five years at Rahway (an apparent hotbed for boxing) as a young man for armed robbery.

James Kirkland has gone to prison on a few occasions, for armed robbery and possession of a firearm and other crimes of that nature.

Edwin Valero stabbed his wife to death in 2010 and then hung himself in his jail cell.

Diego Corrales beat his pregnant wife back in 2001 and went to prison for a little over a year.

Pernell Whitaker did a stint in jail in 2003 for ******* possession.

Carlos Monzon beat his wife and threw her off a balcony in 1988 while on vacation and spent 11 years in the clink for it.

Jack Johnson went to jail after the end of his career for violation of the nefariously racist Mann Act.

And my favorite, Charles "Kid" McCoy spent eight years in San Quintin for shooting a rich married woman with whom he had been cohabitating and then robbing her antiques store (shooting three more people along the way).
