  • Good book on Ray Arcel, and a question

    1. I am looking to buy a good bio of Ray Arcel. Amazon has two:

    http://www.amazon.com/Ray-Arcel-Boxi...ords=Ray+Arcel

    http://www.amazon.com/Champ-Corner-T...ords=Ray+Arcel

Has anyone read either of them? Recommendations?

    2. This is a question I've asked before: Did Ray Arcel have any amateur boxing experience before becoming a trainer?

I have read the first book by Donald Dewey and it based on the review's seems to cover's Ray's life while the second book focus's on the fighter's he's trained. About your question on his boxing experience I lent the book out and have not got it back so I am unable to answer your question.

I have no answer to the questions posed by the thread-starter, but I do have a comment, if I may: I have a sense that Arcel is easily among the top five best trainers of all time, and arguably the longest-lasting trainer ever (even allowing for the fact that he came out of retirement to train Duran).

He trained no less than 18 world champions, including the likes of
        • Benny Leonard
        • Ezzard Charles
        • Jim Braddock
        • Barney Ross
        • Tony Zale
        • Ceferino Garcia
        • Frankie Genaro
        • Sixto Escobar
        • Roberto Duran
        • Larry Holmes
Quiz: He trained (arguably) the two greatest fighters of a certain division, roughly 60 years apart. Can you name the fighters and/or the division?

              Thanks!

That kind of pokes a hole in the theory that someone has to be a great fighter with years of experience in order to be a great trainer.

I rank Arcel as the best trainer of all time.
