    I thought that both robinson and basilio made some good money for the fifties but is the fight I named in the title the one that started the large purses?

    I don't have any statistics to verify that, but I believe it is correct. That fight was huge on closed circuit and (the newly evolving) PPV. The rematch and the Leonard-Hearns fight elevated the pay scale for the sub heavyweights permanently.
