Sugar Ray was an extremely competitive man along with the natural ability to box made him the "Greatest of All Time"! If you break down the components that make up a boxer/fighter you won't find one element in Sugar Ray below par and for that matter below very good! The majority of the keen essentials would be "great"!
He was blessed with the perfect boxers body type and the angles and structure to generate tremendous power in each side of his body!
Fast hands and feet and the ability to absorb punishment with incredible recouperative powers! He adjusted on the fly better than any other fighter to date and could change from a laterial moving boxer to a flat footed puncher in the blink of an eye!!! His record is outstanding and to be the gtreatest at two different weight classes is a tremendous accomplishment!
As for the Grebb discussion; Grebb fought in the earlier era of boxing that wasn't as refined as the Robinson era became known to be! Grebb helped the newer style and forms to evolve but he was a product of the early 1905 style.
His heart and ferocity could carry him through any era and he would achieve high marks but Sugar Ray evolved from the Grebb to Tunney to Louis era's eand never looked back! The Robinson era has been emulated but never surpased, fighters like Hearns, Leonard, Hagler, Pee Wee, to Oscar and Mayweather Jr. have all been served well from the likes of Sugarman but none of them have ALL his attributes rolled into one!!!
Twenty-five years of pro battles and even at the end far beyond his best he was still very good!!! You didn't see him getting KO'd or being pushed around for every minute of every round!!! He was stopped ONCE and that was from fatique in 100degree heat fighting a lightheavy weight for the Title!!!! Ray

No doubt in my mind he's the goat at welterweight.. Had an awesome resume at middleweight as well, but for 1 reason or another, never claimed the scalps of Tony Zale, Dave Sands or Marcel Cerdan, who i'd say were the best of the rest when Ray moved up.. Sands and Cerdan were killed in accidents, which explains why those fights never happened, but Zale still remains a bit of a mystery..
Our old mate GJC, who certainly knew his stuff, did'nt rate the man of steel, and was of the opinion, he never faced the best in his division. So maybe, he ducked SRR?? Do miss that ol'fella, RIP George.

sugar Ray was an artist in the ring with only willie pep coming close to being his peer. Sugar had one variable that pep and benny leonard never had which was fight ending power. He also was a man who learned from his mistakes and was even more lethal. As intelligent as he was in the ring he listened to his corner and made mid-fight corrections.
