  • P4P Greatest Brawlers

Who would you put on this list? We're not talking about the one dimensional limited champions here, but the true best in this general style, who made it work against a variety of top opposition.

I'll start it off with the archetype: Foreman.

Hmmm, Im not sure I'd call Chavez a brawler at all. He was good defensively, countered brilliantly, set up everything he did and was a very smart fighter. He's become bizarrely underrated over the last five/ten years.

In his prime, he was an incredible fighter with skill well beyond what most now attribute to him. He makes any inside guy today look like an utter bag of turd. He was patient, smart, tactical, methodical, which is basically everything you associate with a very clever boxer type. He just happened to fight in a classic Mexican style and go for the KO.

        Carmen Basilio
        Stanley Ketchel
        Terry McGovern

        Are all up there.

Wilfredo Gomez changed his style to more of a brawler type in the 80s, was a boxer-puncher in his prime though dunno if he counts.

Basilio comes to mind, I think Frazier was brawler, especially in the second half of his career. Great technical boxer too but he often relied on his strength and exceptional left hook.

          LaMotta is another.

BTW totally agree with bennyST, JCC had a great boxing mind and could close guys down, fight behind a jab and brawl, it's sad how people seem to view him as a simple brawler. He was far more than that

Actually Lamotta had pretty underrated skills. He reminds me of JCC
