Popular does not mean liked, popular means well known, we're talking about who is the most well known and that is very clearly Tyson, it's not even remotely close.
    Benitez
    Duran x 3
    Hearns x 2
    Hagler
You consider Duran 3 a super fight ?, really ?.

    Holyfield x 2
    Lewis
    Spinks
    Holmes

Leonard has had 1 more, not that it means anything at all.

I agree with any of you who think Mike is one of history's most overrated fighters, but....

Some of you guys are losing your objectivity (SBleeder). There is no doubt Mike Tyson brought the people. Evereyone knew who he was. Everyone watched his fights, and everyone talked about those fights. His popularity resulted in him being overrated- don't you see the irony in you guys denying his appeal?

People are confusing "popular" with "famous".

              popular

              pop·u·lar   [pop-yuh-ler]
              adjective

              1. regarded with favor, approval, or affection by people in general: a popular preacher.
              2. regarded with favor, approval, or affection by an acquaintance or acquaintances: He's not very popular with me just now.
              3. of, pertaining to, or representing the people, especially the common people: popular discontent.
              4. of the people as a whole, especially of all citizens of a nation or state qualified to participate in an election: popular suffrage; the popular vote; popular representation.
              5. prevailing among the people generally: a popular superstition.

^for all of the negativity, plenty of people still adore Tyson. And he's gaining ground, not losing it.

Ali had the a similar problem. He basically behaved like a racist ****** for years, which has been smoothed over with time and his sympathy-inducing current state.

if that's the definition we're going with, then the point of this thread is for naught. ali was pretty infamous for most of his career, and didn't become as much of a sympathetic figure till the latter part of it as well as post retirement.

i don't really remember anyone ever hating tyson pre-****, but then again i was baby. when he was at his best.

The only major issue with Ali for me is his treatment of Frazier.

Tyson was actually far more "popular" than Ali (By Poet's definition) in each of their primes. But no one said we were just talking about the primes of their careers. Ali ended up the most popular Boxer on the planet, so I suppose the question was (or could be interpreted) as asking which Boxer has been able to achieve the most "popularity" since then.
