Who was the most popular fighter since Ali? Popular not just to fight fans but transcending boxing. They became celebrities that even non fans know and attract new fans to the sport.

I'm too young to know, but I think Tyson is the obvious choice. Followed by Oscar maybe?

tysons knockout ability and out of the ring life always kept him in the public eye. He appears in movies and is on talk shows even now that his carreer is over. For a select age group he may be more popular than ali but for myself at age 50 and seeing the hype for the ali frazier fights and seeing ali at his best on film pre exile I know Ali will go down in history as the more popular fighter.

At the risk of parsing the topic, I'm compelled to make a distinction between being popular and famous. I equate popularity to being revered or liked. While the argument could be made for either being more famous than the other, Ali is clearly more popular than Tyson. Tyson's fame - far-reaching as it is - borders on infamy, given his cannibalistic tendencies...
