  • ray arcels best twelve fighters as per the book by donald dewey

Ray Arcel made his list of what he thought were the 12 greatest fighter in 1985 in no paticular order he picked ,Wille Pep, Henry Armstrong, Benny Leonard, Pete Hermon,Mickey Walker, Tiger Flowers, Harry Greb,Jack Dempsy,Joe Louis,
Ray Robinson, Barney Ross and Roberto Duran. He then added seven more to his personal hall of fame Rocky Marciano, Ali,Tony Canzoneri,Ike Williams,Lew Jenkens, Johnny Kilbane and Marcel Cerdan.

What are your thoughts on his list keeping in mind that this was done in 1985?

Can't go wrong there and as far as Arcel goes he and Brown together was a great great corner! Forget about Pete Hermon and Flowers at times those men could fight! Johnny Kilbane is another great and Cerdan had great bouts coming before he was killed in a plane crash, very good fighters.
I study Arcel and men like Eddie Aliano (cutman) and learned alot from them. I hired Eddie everytime in Jersey (ESPN) weither I thought I needed him for a particular fighter or not. If he didn't have to work a cut he would never take a dime from me, he'd say by me a drink. So we'd get a drink from the set up bar after the show. (drinks were free anyway) Arcel gave two pieces of advice and kept his corner very quiet, sometimes the advice was just reminders other times it was offensive or defensive tactics to perform.
No excitement in the corner unless he got pissed off and he would "demand" that you'd get it done. Everything in the positive!! Best cornerman! Ray.

my own thoughts are to take pete herman and tiger flowers out of the top 12 and inserting ali and marciano. From the next seven I would out lew Jekines and Ike Williams inserting Joe gans , Sam Langford and Gene Tunney
