He couldn't make the weight anymore.

He struggled to make it with Leonard in his last welterweight fight.

I can't remember Hearns struggling to make 147 and vs Leonard he weighed in at 145, so I don't think that was it. I think he moved up because there were more big money fights at higher weights

The weight was going to be a problem but at the time he still could get there. The guy was all upper body, his legs were like sticks! Long & Lean. Ray

Hearns had plenty of room to add the weight plus remaining at 147 meant fighting Leonard right away, because Leonard had all the belts at the time. I'm pretty sure Hearns wanted a rematch, but I'm also pretty sure Kronk did not want to throw Tommy back in there with him right away.

Even if Hearns could still make 147, all the opponents he could make big money against had already left that division. There was nothing at welterweight for him except dominance, which isn't as good as money in real life.

It was a weight issue, and he didn't really have a reason to stay, after losing to Leonard.I do remember seeing something concerning the weight factor, but it has been awhile.
