Body punching is always a bit of a risk when you're taller and don't know how to properly protect yourself. Ali did rely on his reflexes more so than proper glove placements to block and parry, and for whatever reason he was always against bending down in favour of leaning backwards. As a result he preferred head punches which he argued were more eye-catching to the judges and would eventually tire out his opponents every bit as much as a body attack.
