Body punching is always a bit of a risk when you're taller and don't know how to properly protect yourself. Ali did rely on his reflexes more so than proper glove placements to block and parry, and for whatever reason he was always against bending down in favour of leaning backwards. As a result he preferred head punches which he argued were more eye-catching to the judges and would eventually tire out his opponents every bit as much as a body attack.

He did however go to the body against opponents of similar height and reach. Here is one of his more consistent body attacks against Alvin "Blue" Lewis, stalking behind a crouch and using his shoulders and elbows to block the incoming punches:

He was a stylish boxer. But he probably went to the body as often as Joe Frazier jabbed. It's just about styles.

I recall Larry Holmes going downstairs quite a bit especially later in his career. Rid**** Bowe and Lennox Lewis all went to the body far more than Ali and both were considerably taller. I just find it a bit strange.
