  • What exactly is so great about Sam Langford?

    I don't really know much about him, but I heard someone on this site say that he would outbox the **** out of Joe Louis..

    I know not to judge a fighter by his record, but...he don't look that great...off his record that is...

    arguably the greatest fighter to not win the crown, many say.

      Here's just a couple of well written articles on this all-time great fighter, my friend;

      http://coxscorner.tripod.com/langford.html

      and...

      http://cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/box7-99.htm#tc

      And when checking out his record you might want to take note of only a few things...like how he was virtually blind in one eye and almost blind in the other for nearly the last decade of his involvement in the fight game (when the majority of Sam's losses took place), the fact that he fought from Lightweight all the way up to Heavyweight, and that it's doubtful that any fighter in history has had more fights against HOF'ers than did Sam...Strange things can happen to a fighter's win/loss record under those circumstances, can't they?

        Sam would have his hands full with Joe who was much better than anyone he ever faced. You must not have really looked at his record. He was considered by many to be the best of his era. He has more HOF fights, almost 60, than any other fighter in history by a huge margin and he won most of those fights. Not many modern fighters even finish up with 50 total career fights.

          Thanks Yogi!!

          You definately know your stuff!
          I was reading the Boxing Register today, and read up on Langford, and that is some amazing stuff!

          He beat Joe Gans as a lightweight, and apparently lost a close close decision to a PRIME Jack Johnson which is amazing!

          He was also blind?
          DAMN!

          This guy is amazing...

            Now There's someone I do think would destroy LANGFORD ( and McVEY. And JOHNSON and JACKSON and Jeannette ), The BROWN BOMBER was better, don't forget there were many who had seen them all as that was only a 30 year or so span and most thought LOUIS was The greatest ever Heavyweight. Few can argue his unreached Long decade plus title reign is UN-MATCHED in HEAVYWEIGHT annals.

              Even if you think Sam is overrated, there isn't too much debate about him being the best never to win a major title.
