Watched this again last night after not seeing since way back when. I know that the Rocky character was inspired by Chuck Wepner...but really Ali vs Bonavena was like watching Rocky 1. Oscar Bonavena has the same body type and size as Stallone in Rocky 1 and similar fighting style...except of course Stallone IMO didn't really pull it off as a boxer...but tried to choreograph his fight scenes I think with Bonavena's fighting style. I have to say though Apollo Creed probably looked better than Ali did at that time in his career...he was a tired fighter back then. I wonder if the Parkinson's was beginning to affect him by then or if he was just not in his best shape.

Considering that the only fight in the last four years was a three rounds, you can be sure that Ali wasn't in the best of shape yet. To me it is extremely unlikely he was showing effects of Parkinsons that far back.Originally posted by jaded View Post -

I know that and you could see that immediately even before it was made public....and I'm not saying that Rocky was based on Bonavena...as I mentioned he admitted it was based on Wepner who actually sued Stallone who subsequently settled with him out of court...I'm just saying that this fight and Bonavena in particular looks like a scene from Rocky 1.
