I just let Doug Fischer of RING Magazine have it!
He posted a letter in his Ring TV mailbag today where a fan writes in and respectfully discusses why he thinks Mayweather is a great fighter and would beat Pacquiao by TKO. The letter was not at all unreasonable and by no means over the top, or disrespectful.
Fischer's reply was to call the guy a Mayweather "nuthugger"
An hour or two later, that letter was no longer on their site, it was gone.
So I reply:
"Is it just me, or is there a certain letter and a certain reply suddenly missing that was published earlier today? Let me get this straight. A fan writes a respectful letter to the Editor-in-Chief of RING Magazine, and for his troubles he is called a "nuthugger" by that Editor? WOW, that is a lowbrow reply by any respectable standard and somebody at The RING was wise to pull that letter/reply before more people saw that exchange between the writer and Mr. Fischer, which was very unbecoming not on the part of the letter writer but on the part of the Editor. Is that where boxing discussion is heading, even at the highest levels? With his ugly verbal assault against HBO's Larry Merchant, Floyd Mayweather effectively closed the door on whatever remained of the gap between boxing's long history of civil discourse and the kind of gutter level trash talk that permeates most boxing message boards these days. All that was left for Floyd Jr. to do was call Merchant a Victor Ortiz "nuthugger" and a "*******." With that response to that fan Doug you have now slammed that door shut. I hope it was just a momentary lapse of reason. Good grief! It's one thing for Floyd to take it to the streets and talk like a message board tough guy, it's quite another when the Editor in Chief of RING Magazine does it! Please, clean it up and keep your standards high! If YOU don't, who will? Remember this: "The RING is a magazine which a man may take home with him. He may leave it on his library table safe in the knowledge that it does not contain one line of matter which would be offensive. The publisher of THE RING guards this reputation of his magazine jealously. It is entertaining and it is clean." Does this still apply in principle if not in practice?"
