  • How about TAG TEAM BOXING? Also, why not bring back 15 rounds??

I suppose this is an old debate as we have had 12 round championship bouts for a great deal of time now. But ironically I'd never inquired as to why it changed after being that way for the longest time. I see nothing wrong with a fight being 15 rounds and IMO it's better for scoring being it's an odd number. Think about it, it's been very relevant in the history of the sport. What if we had 12 rounds back in the old days? For one, I don't think Rocky Marciano would have never become heavyweight champ. Tommy Hearns would have beaten Ray Leonard the first time back in '81. Many historic fights and history would be vastly different. I guess if we can't get that wish, perhaps we can shoot for 13!!

Oh, and how about tag team boxing?! For example, let's say you have a team of Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. The other team consists of the Klitschko's. Before the fight starts the teams choose what rounds a particular fighter would fight. Let's say Mike would get together with Evander and select to fight rounds 1, 2, 5, 7, 9, and 11. Evander would fight the other rounds. No less than 6 rounds for a tag team contestant. But it's up to the teams to choose the rounds in which to fight prior. Only the officials would know what contestant is fighting which round beforehand. Again, this is just an example and idea.

I think trying new things would bring a tremendous amount of excitement to the game and revive the sport! The sport really does need to evolve and have more creativity as it seems MMA is giving it very stiff competition.

For every 1 Hearns vs Leonard there are 10 crappy fights that would just add another 9 minutes of boredom.

good point. i'd still like to see major title fights go 15 for the potential greatness, but you're absolutely right
lots of fights today frankly are snoozers and would only be extended, and not enhanced in any way by 3 extra rounds.

in the lead up to alexander and bradley, knowing that the fight was very likely to go to the decision (and thinking that two of the brightest young americans would actually... you know... fight.) i remember consistently wishing that the fight (and others like it) were scheduled for 15 rounds

if bradley's dome didn't make alexanders eyes burn the three extra rounds would have been torture.

i invited some friends over to watch that fight, thinking that it was relevant, that it had the potential for it to begin to turn the winner over as a star.
      boy was i embarrassed
and boy was i wrong. they stunk that joint out.

we later learned that both fighters agreed to the fight under the assumption that their next fights, win lose or draw, would be on HBO for seven figures
      and they fought accordingly.

i have a classic picture in my head of three grown men, sitting on a on a couch in front of a tv with the live bradley-alexander fight on, sound asleep and covered in crumbs (from the snacking.) it's forever etched in my mind.

It's true that fights can sometimes be boring over 15, but only top notch fighters should fight over that distance...... I am an advocate for 15 round fights for the elite. It's the true championship distance, the great fights that went the whole 15 rounds are so innumerable that there can never be room for them...... As for 12 rounds, I feel that distance results in one particular style to dominate over the other, the ones less inclined to fight.... and there are less wars..... and WARS make the best viewing.

You know, if a fight is a stinker there's this little button on the remote that changes the channel.....it works good whether the fight is for 12 or 15 :cool9:

PS. Not busting your balls here, just responding to peeps saying fights are too boring for 15.

No to tag team boxing but some team events would be good.

I'd love to see a Ryder Cup of boxing with a USA team nominating 1 fighter from each division to take on a fighter from the same division from Europe. Never gonna happen I think but it would be awesome.

A world cup of boxing would be even more amazing, but even more of a logistical nightmare too.
