  • Harry Greb's Personal Exploits?

Considering Tyson specifically references him when he relates his "gonorrhea" story, I figure there must be some stories here. I'm curious whether it's just general Ketchel/Johnson-esque brothel rampages in terms of lifestyle, or anything more specific.

I think Greb's drinking womanising reputation was a bit of a myth. As far as I understand it he was a good husband at least till his wife died. As for drinking and partying how wild could a guy who fought high tempo as often as he did have been?

They managed to do it somehow. It amazes me these guys up through the 50s, fighting multiple times a month, ever had time to do any sort of carousing outside of training camp, but somehow they did.

He was certainly no Ketchel or Jack Johnson. Sometimes he had to act drunk/out of shape to get people in the ring with him though.

He did that when he won the title I believe.

Monzon didn't have the workrate, but he smoked three packs a day and never got tired. Some people just get lucky in the gene lottery.

Greb died at 32 and still outlived his wife? Sounds like a jinxed family.

Not that uncommon pre-antibiotics. My grandfather's mother died at age 30, soon after he was born, around the same period.

As I recall she pre deceased Harry by a few years, can't remember how, maybe spanish flu? Killed more people than WW1 that.
