I believe the best defense of any fighter may be a prime Tyson. I know a lot of old timers might say Willie Pep might be the most masterful of any fighter. Also, worth noting is Marlon Starling who was the welterweight champ for a good portion of the '80's. Pernell Whitaker was an awesome defensive fighter in his day and hie proved it against guys like Chavez. I suppose there are many others I'm forgetting about but I'll write about them in the next installment...

Tyson's offense was his defense. When your opponents are running for their lives you usually don't get hit much. The very few who actually fought him back had little trouble hitting him.

Who has the better defense, Wilfred Benitez or George Chuvalo? Benitez is mentally a 4 year old now and Chuvalo is completely normal and articulate.

His tolerance for the punishment is much lower but his defense was easily better. The punishment is (punches landed) objective. Its effects are separate.

Quality of opposition and number of fights are both huge factors.
