  • Have we lost the punchers?

Do you think that fighters from older eras hit harder then the fighters of today?

Or is it just that styles have changed so much.

Punchers hit as hard as ever and styles are basically the same. Its just that no one remembers boring fights from 40 years ago.

      don't listen to trojans... ever

i'd blame a good portion of it on the current amateur points system
young people grow up boxing without thinking about the effectiveness of their punches

only to score and make sure it registers
and then get out of the way so the judges can tally your blows

and of course there's the promotors and their involvement with cable networks, who usually support fighters and not fights (and it used to be the other way around)
so the matches just aren't always there for fireworks and hard landed punches

and there's cautious fighters in the ring and at the negotiating table

and of course there's a void of talent at HW
outside of two brothers who will not fight each other

and that's where lots of the kayo's are traditionally

and our best puncher on the planet (donaire) is a BW ^^
and he's not getting a ton of attention because of it.

plenty of other reasons as well
i'll put a few up later

If old time fighters did punch harder, smaller gloves no doubt had something to do with it.

Wladamir is a decent puncher but not that amazing considering his size, he failed to knock out the glass-chinned Haye. Abraham is a good puncher. Donaire has genuine ATG power, one of the hardest punching bantamweights for sure, and the number 1 p4p puncher IMO.

Wlad not KOing Haye was more due to him not landing/engaging. Hes still one of the hardest punchers of all time at HW. I dont think size should factor into p4p power if were talking HWs, 200+ everyone is equal in my book.

The thing about Abraham is that his technique and overall skills are mediocre. but the guy has tremendous power. If he didnt have that kind of power, we probably never would have even heard of him.

Abe isnt really an ATG puncher, since he rarely can land those huge heavy shots. but I do believe in terms of simply raw power, hes certainly worth mentioning.
ie Robinson was clearly a better puncher than Cuevas, but in terms of raw power I think Cuevas had more.
