I think Futch knew his fighter well and understood the situation and made a call in Joe's best interest that Joe wouln't make himself. Iwill not second guess Eddie and neither should anyone else

Whats the deal with these rightups? Very well written but is it all factual like the cop shooting himself?

That jumped out at me too. How fucked up would that be if you were like "finally get to relax in my dress- oh god dammit."

If there was ever a time to stop a fight it was surely this one and at the right moment as well. The "Thrilla" was one of my first fights I watched as a kid. My Dad had gave me the VHS tape of the fight for Christmas; I became hooked on boxing after watching that fight and have been a fan ever since.

Epic battle that will go down as one of the greatest heavyweight fights of all time.

It was in that Thrilla in Manilla documentary that was featured on HBO about a year or so ago. Dundee said that Ali told him he couldn't continue anymore and to stop the fight. He wasn't going to come out to the opening bell, but as stated Frazier's corner stopped the fight first. I feel so bad for Joe, but at the same time you can't blame Futch either, there was no way for them to know that Ali was going to stop the fight, and if Joe died in that ring Futch would have been crucified for not stopping the fight. It also would have been on Futch's conscious for the rest of his life that he allowed his fighter to die in there so I can understand why he did what he did.

If only Ali had lost that fight, maybe he would have retired sooner. It is said that when to his surprise that Joe stopped the fight first, he sort of took it as a sign that he should continue to fight on. One can only think that a lost would have been a sign that he needed to retire with his health.

I don't remember Dundee saying that in the documentary last year. I seem to remember him saying something like 'my man was ready, why would he quit? He was on top. He'd have ****** it up for one more round'.

Ali's 14th round was super dominant. No one was pulling Ali out!!

Even if Ali retired after this fight, I still think he'd have got Parkinson's syndrome. I've got a feeling that this fight might have sowed the seeds, he wasn't the same after this fight. Not that I'm a neurosurgeon or a brain specialist!

Cornermen are the ones that look out for your health, because fighters are supposed to never quit. Futch made the right call. and both fighters deserve respect, they were each other's equal in the ring.

he really did save his life, and he did right as a cornerman.

I've just watched the HBO and the C4 documentary. Pacheco confirms that Ali told Dundee to cut off his gloves. From the look of total surprise on Ali's face when the towel went in I think it's pretty obvious he thought he'd got off lucky.

Frazier was unable to defend himself in the 14th. Ali caught him repeatedly and on at least two occasions Joe's knees buckled. Ali no doubt knew the fight was tight (he might have been down on the cards) and went for the kill. But by sheer superhuman willpower Joe stayed up and Ali blew himself out. He was shot. Finished.

This was evidenced by the fact that Ali collapsed after the decision. He was in no position to continue. Joe could have got off his stool (he certainly wanted to) but without knowing Ali's condition and from the beating Frazier took in the 14th Futch faced the prospect of his man being killed in the ring. I firmly believe that had Ali another round in the tank Frazier would have left the ring in tragic circumstances. Futch couldn't be a part of that and made the call. Right or wrong Frazier lived. And I guess that's the most important fact.
