He was in the right place at the right time. The deal he got for dropping his title to Louis instead of Schmelling was probably the best ever. Even Don King is humbled by it. Something like 10% of all Joe's earnings for about 10 years.

He had to. They feared Schmeling would win, and Hitler would safeguard the title for propganda reasons, preventing Louis from ever winning it.

He really had a tough time of it after that Loughrane fight he just took loss after loss but things turned right for him in the end. Joe Gould really had his head screwed they literally did everything possible to avoid fighting schmelling and ended up getting that incredible deal off Louis but I think its telling that after that fight Louis always said Braddock had more heart than anybody else he'd ever fought and always refered to him respectfully as "champ" whenever they met. He has a couple of great wins particularly in his later career but Loughrane showed that anybody with decent skills that boxed smart should be able to get the better of him.

I've only seen his two title fights, but every indication is that he was just a journeyman fringe contender who got a little momentum and a title shot. The champion (Baer) dismissed him as unworthy and was ripe for the upset. Then he found himself in a jackpot situation, similar to Douglas being able to leverage Holyfield and Tyson for an inflated payday. But at least Braddock showed up in respectable fighting shape for Louis.
