I suppose when comparing the heavyweight champions Schmeling falls somewhere into the middle but will always be remembered as the only man to handily beat a prime Joe Louis and for this feat alone he achieves legendary status.
Like Gene Tunney, Schmeling was a very cultured individual who after boxing excelled in business, and it should be mentioned, used large sums of his wealth to champion humanitarian causes all over the world which included paying medical bills and taking care of his old adversary, the Brown Bomber.

Max Schmeling was trapped under the wing of Nazi Germany, survived two world wars and lived until he was 99. What he must have experienced throughout his life has to be one of the most incredible journals in sporting history.

Makes me really angry when people bash him for "Being a Nazi"

Don't they realise he took in two Jewish kids in the ghetto clearings?
He paid for Joe Louis' funeral.
etc etc. The list goes on great man.

He also looks like Jack Dempsey.
