Why is the sport even called "boxing"

Is it because the ring is a square? Because what does a box have to do with fist fighting?
Then again then couldn't name the sport "fisting"

Middle Dutch boke (“a blow, a hit”), Middle High German buc (“a blow”), Danish bask (“a blow”)

in dutch "boks" (pronounced box) is called a blow.
