  • Ron Stander

Does anybody remember this guy? He was a tough hw contender from the 70's, surprised everyone by koing Shavers in 5 in 1970. He stood only 5'11 but had good punching power and chin. He lost to Frazier and Norton, both by TKO5. He ultimately fought for too long and lost 9 of his 11 last fights. Retired with a record of 38-21-3, 29 knockouts.

I remember and know a bit. when he got beaten by Joe Frazier in his only title try, Stander's wife refering to the mismatch that had just taken place said something like' "it was like entering a VW beetle in the Indianapolis 500" meaning the Nebraskan had little chance. He later served as a referee.

Stander was a very tough guy. Had he trained harder he probably could have been a top ten fighter. He was rarely in shape and the losses started to creep in. He was a good body puncher and could really take a punch. Jeff Merrit did floor him though. He also cut easily. By all accounts he is a very nice guy. He lives in Omaha Nebraska now.

He was like Chuck Wepner, George Chavalo, Jerry Quarry, Two-Ton Galanto, and the guy that fought Larry Holmes who said he broke Larry's hands with his face, can't remember his name, all very simular fighters, tough, hard-hitting, no stamina, or defence, but entertaining to watch. These fighters should have fought each other!!!!!

Randall 'Tex Cobb' is the guy you're referring to and to be fair, he and the other fighters you've mentioned were all a bit better than Stander. I agree with barfly12, in that he didn't keep himself in particularly good shape. He'd enter fights (probably at short notice) weighing anything between 220 and 250, which is why imo, he was more of a journeyman than a contender.

Strange how he became a ref, because i'm sure it was Ron Stander who came over to London and had an unlicensed 10 rounder with Roy 'Pretty Boy' Shaw who was considered to be one of the toughest bare knuckle men in England at the time. I believe this must have been just after he'd retired and to the best of my knowledge, Shaw won the fight on points and they went and had a beer together afterwards.

Yes it was Stander Micky. Even by Pretty Boy's own admission Stander would have battered him but he had a broken rib so wasn't in great shape.

Stander was possibly the worst boxer to have fought for the world title when it comes to boxing technique. He seemed to have learned how to fight in a bar/pub, and he did proudly boast that he would be the heavyweight champion if the fights were fought in a phone booth. The Stander vs Shaw fight is on film, Stander looked to have a broken rib and could barely move. Against Ken Norton, he was taking 10 punch combinations yet never went down. Frazier went to town on him with uppercuts that viciously snapped his head back, but Stander kept swinging away despite missing by miles. Shavers knocked himself out punching at his chin.
