Liston seems to be the favourite around here in this fight but for me its Tyson by KO. I just think Mike is simply to fast for Sonny, i see him slipping that jab before crashing hooks off of Sonnys head. Obviously this is Liston so he has a great chance but IMHO its Tyson early, well before that 15 round distance comes into effect

      Liston KO8.

Liston's speed is getting under-estimated. That was not a prime Liston in the Ali fight and I think many people saying "he would slip that jab" have no idea how powerful and fast it was.

Was Patterson too fast for Liston?

I wouldnt call Liston fast personally, and i mean at any point. Patterson was dead before he even got in the ring Iron Mike is a different kettle of fish altogether

Not "fast" but, he didn't throw big slow lumbering punches either.

No Liston was no sloth, against Clay/Ali he was older and not as sharp, it didnt help that he was in against THE Fastest HW of all time either! But ive seen a whole lot of Liston fights and he's not a guy ud pick out for speed. Tyson it can be argued is second only to Ali in speed, he's certainly One of the faster HW's we've ever had, and i think thats the difference. I know thats a basic anaylisis but i think its that simple differnce that wins it for Mike

Sonny Liston is a one of a kind fighter. If you manage to slip his jab what are you coming into? Probably a slug-fest, not a big open target like most fighters with long reaches.

Liston could punch like nobodys buisness and was bull strong but Mike was a Thrashing Machine in that mid range area, right beyond the jab. Liston is my Third favourite HW ever but i dont this match for him

He would have to take this fight inside. If he stays Mid-range he isn't getting to Sonny Liston. That's the thing though I'd take Sonny to beat Mike on the inside. Mike wasn't a great inside fighter,he fought at the mid-range and that's why Sonny wins.

If Tyson stays to far out he gets jabbed out-boxed easilt.
If he stays mid-range Sonny stops him.
If he can get inside and mount an offense he has a better chance but, Mike usually did nohting on the inside and Sonny could tear it up in that zone.

I disagree that Mike wouldnt win mid range, i think he gets inside the Liston jab and lets his bombs fly, Sonny tries the same but Tyson's speed advantage wins the day. There's not a whole lot in it power and chin wise however u like it but Mike has the big speed edge and is a better combination puncher, mid range is Tyson turf.

I DO agree tho that Mike would be ineffective inside. I do not have a clue why he didnt let his shots go inside often, he had the pefrect frame/arms for in fighting and got devasting power on his short punches but he rarely let his hands go inside, his inside game is nearly non exsistant and i cant figure out why! If he had learned or applied a good inside game he'd be an even more effective fighter
