  • Feinting, a lost art?

Feinting was a very popular tactic in the early 1900's used routinely by many greats such as Sam Langford saying modern fighters "Don't know how to feint a man".

Why -these days- does the feint get ignored?

Mayweather and Hopkins are quite skilled at it, very subtle.

PBF is the best feinter I've seen since Burley.

Alot still do but there are many skills young fighters are not taught these days.

I mostly see feints used by and against counter punchers. Both to get the other to commit.

First, I see feinting all the time nowadays and I see it with punches and foot/head movement. Second, Sam Langford's been dead for 54 years, how can he comment on modern fighters?

Lol, not these set of modern fighters.

I'm not talking about it being ignored altogether just not used as much as it once was.

Oh I see. Well when I see footage from waaaaay back when you're talking about, they do this crazy **** where they wave their arms around...I've actually been meaning to ask: what are they doing besides wasting energy?

It was a mandatory skill back then, no matter what style you used, you would use the feint a lot. Take Langford for example he was a boxer-slugger and in the few fights I've seen whether he is slugging he feints in abundance.

I mentioned this on the LL vs Ingo thread a couple of days ago.
Lewis was very proficient at feinting and did it in nearly all of his fights. He liked to give the impression he was gassing or distressed and would do a slow feint to the left and unleash a right hand bomb almost simultaneously.
