  • old fighters in modern era

now we are talking fighters such as jim jeffries and bob fitzsimmons and jim corbett

could these fighter sbe contenders or better in the modern era given say six months training in the modern rule-set

James J. Corbett certainly could. He was a very good boxer with fencer like movements and was great at controlling range. James J. Corbett was one of the first scientific boxers and would adapt ro whatever the situation may be and would certainly win a title today.

Jeffries was very strong fighter great at grinding down fighters with hard blows to the body and head. From the little footage I've seen he wasn't a bad boxer either often going inside throwing a combination then out again. I again believe Jeffries would do well in any era after adjustments.

Bob Fitzsimmons is another strong fighter who was also a keen wrestler I believe. If I had to classify him I'd say he was a boxer slugger with great power and a great ability to score in close and in the clinches. Another good fighter and again I see him doing well in modern times after a few adjustments.

It's basically a different sport from when those guys fought, the rules are so different. I think it would require more than six months of training, they'd have to make so many adjustments. What made a successful fighter then is also different, less based on outlasting and clinching. In conclusion I'd say it's possible given enough training, but one can never make some sort of definitive statement such as "of course they would."

Bit of a moot point, let's ask the question, "how many of today's Middleweights could last 20 rounds with Les Darcy with just 6oz gloves", Darcy was always able to go the full 20 rounds at full pelt and SMILE through the entire bout, you see it was just pure sport and a totally enjoyable pastime, it must have been if you think about it, he had about 18 bouts in 1916 alone and won them all, man was he tough too!!!! he never once hit the canvas. And how would todays Cruiserweights fare in a 40 plus rounder with a Prime JOHN L. SULLIVAN with few rules and NO gloves, do you think DANNY GREEN would like that prospect ?,........ I think any of the Top Pre-60's 250 or so would learn our modern conditions AND dominate MOST divisions, only the likes of a PACQUIAO would manage to stay afloat, but even PAC-MAN would have to stay under the featherweights, ( PEP would win 8 out of 10 against him), he certainly couldn't live with a Walker or Robinson, NOR could MAYWEATHER . Final comment,... don't even get me started about a match up between the likes of a Anthony MUNDINE vs FITZSIMMONS clash,.... old ruby BOB would have annihillated him in a Round, and MUNDINE tries to call himself a 3 Times world Champ, this is THE MAIN problem in the modern version, there's some like 17 divisions and about 8 titles on offer in each at last count, HOW can anybody pick a top 10 p4p list with any certainty ??????????????
