    Merqui Sosa

Here's an unsung warrior who i don't see mentioned too often.

Sosa, a good puncher from the Dominican Republic was never a world champion but he certainly went in with enough of them..
He was far from disgraced either, gaining wins over Sanderline Williams (hell'va tough fighter), Glen Johnson, Sergundo Mercado and Prince Charles Williams with whom he had 2 great fights if i remember rightly..
He also fought James Toney, Steve Little, Tony Thornton, Michael Nunn, Roy Jones and Frankie Liles with the first 3 being taken right up to the wire..

I'd say he's got quite an impressive resume. What are your views and opinions on him?

He was very strong and gave a prime Toney hell. I think it was his fight with prince Charles that was so brutal that the docter had the fight stopped because both was too beaten to go on any further. I think that fight ended his prime. He was the type of fighter that fought anyone. I think he should get hall of fame consideration because of his opposition.

Ive only seen Sosa in with Toney, Thorton and Jones. And he lost to all three, Jones wiped him out early 2 or 3 rounds if i remember right.

He did give JT a real hard nights work tho but if im honest i dont think that was exactly vintage Toney. Good fighter no doubt about it tho. Malone whats his win over Johnson like? Did he deserve it, i know Glen feels he was robbed in most of his losses

He fought Sosa the same year he fought McCallum, and i always say the McCallum fights was one of Toneys best showings, especially considering who he was in against. I think he was just entering his " lower weight prime" (since he basically has two parts to his career) around that time.

I also remember in an interview (im thinking it was one of the Sam Peter fights) where the interviewer asked if he had been hit harder, and Toney stated that Merqui Sosa was the hardest puncher hes ever fought.

Tbh, i havn't seen the fight but it was only a few months after his one and only stoppage defeat to B/Hop and while Johnson does like a whinge-up, it has to be said that he's lost to quite a few worse fighters than Sosa.

Cant argue there slick i just remember thinking he wasnt on his A game that night. Mabey i'll take another look but on memory i felt even tho James was in his prime or very near to it that he had an off night

Yeah i remember Toney saying that, i think it was at the Peter fight, mabey im wrong but its how i remember it and ive only watched it the once.

Jones destroyed him tho, in his defence tho that was about 5 years and a few losses later, tho he did beat Johnson after it. No shame there anyway Roy Jones was devasting back then

He was a tough fighter. When he fought Toney they were both undefeated upcoming fighters. I remember it was sorta a coming out party for Toney.

I also remember later Ring mag. labeled Sosa's "the best chin" in boxing which must have been a curse because after that his career and abilty to take a punch came undone.

Sosa's battles with Charles Williams were classics!
