I think "snap" etc. is a bit of a red-herring. The SOURCE of the power is the deciding factor.

"Heavy handed" punchers usually generate their power through the torso, shoulders and arms whereas "explosive" punchers drive hard through the legs.

It's no co-incidence that lethal hitters such as Tyson and Hamed had enormous thighs.

I wouldn't say so. I mean, sure it seemed like Tyson needed three or four good hits to put an opponent down. But I think this was somewhat illusory because of his speed. Very often Tyson did the damage with one punch and then landed another three or four on top for good measure.

I wasn't a big fan of his, but Mike Tyson was the epitome of what an explosive puncher is. That's not saying he didn't have heavy hands too.

Sorry but you are wrong here, when i hear 'explosive puncher' i instantly think of Tyson and their is a reason for that,he is the definition of it

Heavy handed = George Foreman. Knocks you down or across the ring, but not necessarily out. Explosive = Julian Jackson or Tommy Hearns. Puts you to sleep.

Usually more hand speed involved in explosive.

"Heaviness" comes from pure strength. George Foreman, David Tua, Marcos Maidana, those kinda guys.
"Explosiveness" comes from technique. Nonito Donaire, Juan Manuel Marquez, Floyd Mayweather, those kinda guys.

"Scary" comes when you get both. Joe Louis, Thomas Hearns, Mike Tyson, Ray Robinson, etc. ATG punchers all generate their power from both strength AND technique, meaning they can wear your out OR stop you with one shot.

The perfect fight to show the difference is Cotto vs Judah. Cotto has heavy thudding punches that stay with Zab u could almost see Zab's energy bar draining!

Judah on the other hand seems to have little power then BAM! he explodes a shot out of nowhere and Miguel is on ***** street

A guy like Foreman is heavy handed, he had ***** technique he'd just swing his clubbing punches but a guy like Tyson was explosive, his speed was as much of a factor of the devasting effect his shots had as anything, great technique and the power generating from the legs
