De La Hoya-Quartey produced a classic, classic confrontation in the final round, the likes of which was just immense in the moment. It was as gripping as any fight of that year --- in fact, I would call it the highlight moment of 1999. The rest of the fight upto that point had been very good, but not all-time great. Every minute of Corrales-Castillo I, on the other hand, was just unreal. It's perhaps a bit of a shame, then, that these two wonderful fights left a bad taste in the mouth of supporters for the losing parties. Quartey fans felt their man had won, & Castillo die-hards refuse to accept legitimacy to that fight after the disgrace of the gumshield farce.

With due respect to the show De La Hoya & Quartey put on, it is quite easily Corrales-Castillo I as the answer. A better challenge would be comparing that fight to, say, Morales-Barrera I, or Vazquez-Marquez III. That is truly tough to answer.

How can you not rate Corralea/Castillo a classic? Recently you put up a thread on the classic fights you do like to watch, even though you have all the fights of Leonard, Ali etc, and they were all poor versions of this fight...apart from some like Limon/Chacon, Edwards/Chacon etc.

Any which way you look at it, whether you hate the fighters or not, it's a pure piece of boxing history from today and easily one of the great fights of all time.

The top-3 fights of the decade, 2000-09, IMO...

          Morales-Barrera I
          Corrales-Castillo I
          Vazquez-Marquez III

          Chronological order.

Yep, I'd go with that. I think Morales/Barrera has to be number one. I can't actually think of a better fight than that. Not Ali/Frazier, not Holyfield/Bowe....I just think that is the classic fight of all time. Ridiculously high skill level, power, speed, grudge, guys getting hurt, coming back......It's just everything that is great about this often ****ty sport that we all love.

                What a random comparison.

Corrales-Castillo 1 is one of the greatest fights of all-time. Terrific, skillful, and violent in-fighting, and the fight gradually got better and better as it went on, until the 8th. An amazing round 8, a terrific round 9 (though not as great as round 8), and an unforgettable round 10.

Meanwhile, DLH-Quartey had two very exciting rounds and the rest of the fight was blah. A posefest. Most of it wasn't even a skillful chessmatch where one guy makes a mistake, and the other guy makes him pay. It was largely two guys STARING and POSING at each other.
