That's why it's so hard to make lists in those divisions, there are more than ten top 10 worthy fighters. Just look at middleweight:

Harry Greb, Marvin Hagler, Carlos Monzon, Ezzard Charles, Sam Langford, Sugar Ray Robinson, Marcel Cerdan, Roy Jones, Jake LaMotta, Kid McCoy, Bernard Hopkins, Stanley Ketchel, Tony Zale, **** Tiger, Bob Fitzsimmons, Tommy Ryan, Freddie Steele, Marcel Thil, Tiger Flowers, Charley Burley, Gene Fullmer, Mike Gibbons, Jack Dempsey, Eddie Booker, Ken Overlin, Holman Williams, Joey Giardello...

I think its ****** to compare guys who were fighting for the most part weekend warriors and were fighting sometimes 2 or 3 times a month etc to modern boxers its like a different sport. For me the way I separate the 2 are by Don King/Ali they brought money to the sport and made it so your were fighting less and against real fighters and many other things.

Its like comparing Barry Bonds to Babe Ruth what is the point the sport is just different.

Dempsey did not duck Harry Willis, he signed to fight twice but, they both fell through.

Why post in a thread, then, if you think its entire premise is ******?

This is just like someone asking for the best Middleweights of all-time, & someone responding with, "Heavyweight is a better division, IMO, so I'm going to list the best HW's instead."

The topic has nothing to do with exclusively examining modern Boxing (determined at some arbitrary point in time, no less).

Kind of beggers the point doesn't it? The real question is why is he even posting in this section. It's pretty clear that NSB is the place for him with the other ignorant fan-bois.

PS. That "weekend warrior" take of his has already been decisively refuted and discredited by several posters.

Dempsey faced numerous black fighters before winning the title. There was only one black heavyweight Dempsey out to have fought while he was champion (Wills) the fight not happening was more down to politics than Dempsey ducking him. He at least attempted to make the fight.

Although none were up to the standard of Wills.

I have my douts how much Dempsey did actually push for the fight to be honest.

Only occasionally defending his title against fighters that Harry Greb had all ready beaten. Another fighter (Greb) he didn't have much interest in fighting.

He wasn't very interested in fighting at all after winning the title and espcially not against the best fighters that were avaible.

Dempsey's team/management may have made attempts to seem as if they were interested in fighting Wills.

But was this just a act to make the public belive they wanted the fight? Do you honestly belive Dempsey and his team went all out to make the Wills fight happen?

For Dempsey to be the Heavyweight Champion & not fight his number #1 contender for 8 long years, and choose to fight lesser fighters, is pretty terrible and I find it hard to defend him here.

Dempsey signed to fight twice and it fell throught. It was his manager who wanted nothing to do with him not Dempsey himself.

Actually the promoter more than anyone else. Tex Rickard refused to put on any more interracial bouts after the Johnson - Jeffries fight.
