Did Carmen Basillio box Amateur?

Been watching alot of carm's fights he seemed to learn his trade on the the job after geting beat a few times early on, did he box amateur?

He had 3 fights when he was in the marines and when he was discharged he entered the Golden Gloves and some AAU Championships.

Wasn't much though, virtually none, can say that he did learn his trade in the Pro ring.
