  • Where does Carmen Basillio rank on an ATG list?

On an ATG list for the following:
    Pound for pound-
    Welterweight-
    Middleweight-
and other weight classes he competed in (I'm not too sure if there was any)-

I find all-time pound-for-pound lists just too difficult beyond ten or so fighters --- the collective history of Boxing is just that expansive & immense, the more you know, the harder the job becomes.

As both a Welter & a Middle, I'd have him in my top-15 of all-time for those divisions.

Pound for Pound he easily makes Top 100.
Top 15 of Welterweight and Top 20 Middleweight.
He was the toughest of the tough and would give anyone a good fight.

Agreed. I'm not certain there's been a Welter or Middleweight who'd have had an easy time with him.

A clash between Basilio & Trinidad (two top 15-20 all-time Welters) at 147lbs. would've been a sensation, IMO.

The era encompassing the years 1950-1960 was one of great WWs and MWs. The Top Ten in both weight classes read like a Who's Who of boxing greats. Carmen Basilio succeeded because he was a puncher with a relentless attack style who always went forward never backing down.

If I recall correctly at one time he was voted one of the greatest WWs of all time (might have been the Hall of Fame or Ring Magazine who gave him that designation though I cannot recall for sure). He had a small frame and, to me, was not a natural MW. Yet, he defeated Sugar Ray Robinson and gave Gene Fullmer two tough fights (if you see these fights on tape, both opponents were taller & had bigger frames than he did). Thus, he deserves to be considered one of the best PFP boxers of all time.

Excellent fighter who is worthy of the Top 10 WW and knocking on the door Top 20 MW.. last weekend i watched several of his fights and they was all classics which is why he holds the record of most RMFOTY bouts.

That's about right, an ATG chin, an ATG Heart, ATG most exciting ( Top 5 ), very tricky and one my ATG Top 10 Favorite fighters,..... Basilio vs DeMarco II is just about my favorite of all-time and my No. 1 best fight of the 1950's for sure,,..... and you know that's saying something. Anybody who hasn't seen it must see it immediately and just marvel at the 2 of them, Massive puncher against Granite Jaw. the "onion Farmer" will never die.
