    Great Fighters Who Refereed Big Fights.......

    I always thought this was pretty cool. List some great fighters who acted as the referee in some big fights.

    I shall begin;

    Archie Moore vs Yvon Durelle - Referee Jack Sharkey
    Muhammad Ali vs Sonny Liston II - Referee Jersey Joe Walcott
    Barney Ross vs Jimmy McLarnin III - Referee Jack Demspey

        I can't speak to the other two fights, but Walcott did maybe the most atrocious job of refereeing in heavyweight title history.

            Dempsey and Sharkey did pretty well as referees in those respective matches.

            From what I can remember, Ross vs McLarnin III was a pretty clean fight and all Dempsey had to do was separate them in clinches every so often - he didn't over-emphasis his authority as some refs tend to do. I think Sharkey did a fine job as well - considering he gave Moore every possible chance to recover in the first round when he was dropped something like 3 times - Moore was on ***** street for a while and got up at the count of 9 as well for one of the counts.

            Walcott was horrendous - he spent too much time trying to send Ali to a neutral corner and failed to keep him there, and he also spent too much time trying to pick up the count from the time-keeper.

              Even worse, he took the word of a magazine publisher (Nat Fleischer) the fight would be decided.

              I saw Joe Louis referee a few fights and he wasn't very good either.
