McLarnin has a freak resume though, as does Canzoneri. Difficult one.

    Great thread Jab.

On McLarnin though; Villa was simply too small. Flyweight fighting a natural, and prime 135/147 pounder.
Leonard of course came back after his seven year retirement and fought a bunch of cans before than fighting his first big fight against McLarnin but was done.
    Kaplan was a top win.
His only win over Bud Taylor was a DQ, otherwise he lost the other two fights
Mandell he beat in a non title fight, but lost in the title fight.
Petrolle was a bizarre fighter. One day he'd beat McLarnin, the next he'd lose to a bum and he did this over and over again. Get knocked out by some nobody, then go and beat Canzoneri. Crazy.

Anyway, the Ross win is monstrous. Corbett's only loss in about ten years was to McLarnin I think for the title.

But, to get to the point, some of the wins were brilliant, amazing wins. Others were good, especially in terms of name value but not so good when you look at it. Like the Taylor win, the Leonard win etc. I think he also lost to most of these guys too. He'd lose, then beat or win then lose.

Isn't it sad that this doesn't happen any more? The top guys all fighting each other over and over, all trying to prove without any doubt they really are the best.

Lets start with Jimmy McLarnin, Barney Ross and Tony Canzoneri vs Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns and Roberto Duran. Which 3 had the better combined resumes and Why?

Feel free to add other trios and make comparisons as well!
Ross, Canzonari & McLarnin have the better resume IMO

McClarnin was only 17 when he beat Villa, who was smaller (by 6lbs) but also vastly more experienced. There aren't many 17 year olds with a win like that on their resume.

You could do exactly the same for Duran, Hearns and Leonard. Hagler and Leonard were both past prime when they fought and it was a much-disputed decision. Leonard and Hearns were both much bigger and younger than Duran, a natural lightweight, and Duran was 37 when Leonard won the rubbermatch. Cuevas' best wins were against guys like Ranzany, Weston and an old Billy Backus. Marcel was quite young when Duran beat him (as was Duran) and so on.
