Eder Jofre or Alexis Arguello?

Arguello fought better competition no doubt. But he also wasn't nearly as flawless as Jofre. Jofre arguably never lost a fight. He has 72 wins. Only 2 official defeats. He fought until he was 40. His career was nearly 20 years long.

Perhaps his most impressive win was when he challenged for the lineal Featherweight crown, aged 37 and a clear underdog, yet still won. He then defended it against the best Featherweight of his era (when he was the best Bantamweight). 2 division lineal champ, 1 division undisputed, 72-2-4 over 20 years. Pretty damn unheard of.

No doubt that Arguello fought better competition? Hmmm, I'd argue that quite happily. They had quite a few common opponents too, Jofre fighting them in their primes obviously. I'd say that Jofre fought in the toughest BW era ever. Arguello fought in a great era too. They both fought amazing competition, with Jofre beating the greater fighters and accomplishing more, but as to their competition overall? Very arguable.

Arguello: Well, we all know his competition. Olivares was probably the greatest fighter he fought. Best opponents;

All excellent fighters. We remember them all much better too, which is always a factor in thinking that means they are better. Jofre was in his prime before Arguello started fighting and was finishing up as Arguello started his career.

Some truly great wins and some bad losses, but overall excellent fighters. Great fighters even. The Augustus' of their time. Although most great fighters/contenders were liek Augustus then. They fought everyone, were bloody good but lost to the best, sometimes beat them and gave everyone they fought very hard fights.
