  • Jack Dempsey taking a dive against Fireman Jim Flynn

What are your thoughts on Dempsey taking that dive against Fireman Jim Flynn, does it harm his standing in history.

Well it's not 100% fact it was a fix. Although most feel it was, you can never be sure, as Dempsey did always deny it.

Here's a very interesting article on the fight.

It was a dive taken in a time when dives were not so obvious. It's also pretty ironic how Jack Johnson always claimed to take a dive against Willard while few believed him and Demspey apparently does so against Flynn, forever denies it, and few believed him as well.

It's also ironic how one fight was too short and the other was too long. A good fix is neither.

It was a dive plain and simple.

To answer Sonny's question if you give a guy unfed for four days money to do what you ask him to do, he willdo it. Dempsey did it to. I sincerely beleive he will be judged by whathe did later on, when he became more secure.

There's a bunch of eyewitness statements still around from that time that back up the story that Dempsey took a dive. Nat Fleischer, Ring Magazine, some newspapers, Dempsey's first manager, Dempsey's first wife, and a few others who were in attendance, and they all say the same thing in regards to Jack agreeing to go down in the 1st round.
