He was once ranked #5 at Heavyweight in the 1931 Ring Magazine Ratings. Which I find pretty incredible, considering only 6 years prior he was Welterweight Champion.

So a shot at the Title wasn't out of reach. After Walker drew with Sharkey, 2 fights later Sharkey would become HW Champion.

But after he drew with Sharkey, the champ at the time was Schmeling, who he would eventually fight after Schmeling had just lost the belt, and we seen what happened to Walker in that one, he got a terrible beating.
