  • Why didnt James Toney fight Benn or Eubank?

I just watched a James Toney doc on boxingscene. He talks alot about fighting Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank. Why didnt he fight them? Benn (WBC) Eubank (WBO) and Toney (IBF) all super middleweight champs. Does anyone know?

It was a Jonathan Ross show from memory.

Eubank and Benn eliminated themselves with their draw in 1993 and then Toney lost to Jones.

As for Benn and Eubank being knocked out by Toney. Benn had a slightly fragile chin but managed to endure the punches of McClellan! In fact, barring the retirements against Collins, Benn was never stopped at Supermiddleweight, so I dont see a stoppage win for Toney.

As for Chris Eubank, one of the best chins in world boxing that I've ever seen, he had some slick defensive smarts too. Toney would not stop him, I think a points decision is much more likely.

They were all champions from 93-94, a fight should of happened, with at least one of them

I think Benn would of got worn down by counter rights, like Barkley was

            Good point
At mw Eubank gives Toney fits, like Reggie Johnson did. At smw I would favour Toney by Ud, Chris slowed down a lot at smw and didnt use lateral movement as much as he did at mw

              Hi mate,

I'd have really liked a Toney fight with either or both of them..........or a Jones fight too. Crying shame, but thats boxing.

As for Benn being worn down by counter rights, it is of course possible......but he absorbed harder counter rights from McClellan all night, so I wouldn't be putting money on it.

As for Chris Eubank, I'm a real fan of his. I hope history is kind to him! He is a nasty matchup for just about anyone at middleweight. He'd get decisioned by the very best, but I think he'd always put up a good show.
