You can sort of understand where r.burgundy was coming from though. For large sections of fights and some whole fights Roy dispensed with the jab. His revenge win against Griffin for example - he didn't throw a single jab in that round....

in some fights he'd throw jabs seemingly as a diversionary shot, mixed in with lead hooks and rights, and in other fights he used the jab as a real weapon to set up his other shots

roy never really used a jab,roy usually led with hooks.especially after he left 160.i have almost his whole career on dvd.

and having a good jab doesnt mean it was often used.floyd has a great jab,but doesnt use it much

1 fight does not make a career.and i wouldnt even use the word fight to describe that pazienza non-sense.anybody who has followed roy knows he leads primarily with left hooks.

Mike Tyson - excellent jab considering his short reach
he had way faster hands lol

he used the jab more in his comeback, but he was no larry holmes

show me a tyson fight where he works behind the jab and it was excellent

The thread title does say non existant jab and its clearly not the case with Jones. I've got many of his fights too......and yes the lead left hook was a fave. But the one-two was very much used too, obviously the jab followed by the straight right..........or the jab jab cross (I seem to remember some nice examples in the Hill and Woods fights).

I'm a huge fan of Jones and while he did neglect the jab in some fights I would still say it was still a terrific punch in his arsenal.

what fighter really has a non-existant jab?
i went with the next best thing which would be fighters who rarely use it,and jones would fit that bill

well you said it, he relied more on the jab in his comeback, and he had one hard jab

maybe you already forgot, but you suggested Tyson and Foreman didn't have a jab (didn't use it), and that's not true at all

As I've said earlier in the thread Max Schmelling comes to mind, seemed to paw with it to make room for the right.

I'd say Joe Frazier's jab was more underutilised than Tyson's, although.....he did have a jab. Marciano too, again....he did have a jab but I cant think that it was used too much.

Historically I dont remember Jimmy Wilde or James J Jeffries being two who used the jab much.

But fair enough, it is doubtful as to if we could find an ATG fighter who genuinely couldn't/didn't jab. Its just that there are far worse examples than Roy Jones, Mike Tyson and George Foreman who at times showed good jabbing.

Worst jab of all time goes to Donny Lalonde, in the commentary of the Leonard fight......I think by Reg Gutteridge, I seem to remember him saying something like 'his has a good right hand, but he waves his left all over the place like he is a traffic constable'.
