i think the only Joke is Ali he never even knew the rules of Boxing back in the 1920s, he describes Dempsey's style as "Wild Swinging" yet even today when a world class boxer has an opponent in trouble and goes in for the kill that boxer will resemble Dempsey, take a look at Round 15 of Muhammad Ali vs Chuck Wepner and Ali is "Wild Swinging"... i have seen all those video's of Ali talking to Cosell about fighters from the past and Ali claims that Gene Tunney was the best because he was scientific and ressembled himself, Yet Dempsey gave Tunney the hardest fights of his career in Dempsey's final carrer fights.
Dempsey showed more sheer boxing skill as he got older. He wasn't always the wild swinger, the frantic round one in the Willard fight might have been down to Kearn's bet on a first round win.
I think a prime Dempsey is a pretty nasty proposition for Ali over 15 rounds. I think Ali would win..................but he'd suffer more than he did against George Chuvalo, who left Ali hospitalised with bleeding kidneys that night in 1966!!
Ali also claims Dempsey wound't of stood a chance with him, and boxing back then was just wild & dirty.
Ali makes very good points. Dempsey would not have been champion during this era. It was a different time and they didn't know what fighters know today. The sport has really evolved. Thats why you cant really compare modern day fighters like Ali to fighters of the 20's.
dempsey knew what he had to do to take down a man that much larger then him and that was shift stepping and lunging into the air.
im sure had it been dempsey vs tunney, they watched, he might of had diffrent things to say.
Sure.
When Sugar Ray wanted to dispose Turpin he looked wild.
As did Ali vs Wepner.
As did Dempsey vs Willard.
As did a whole lot of fighters when they went for the kill. Jack wanted to Ko willard in the 1st round. Honestly Ali talked a lot of **** to hype himself up. Nothing wrong in it. But his comments about some fighters are a bit assidious. Dempsey was skillfull enough to box, when he wanted to. Against big fighters he went in for the kill at the earliest.
Jack would have given Ali the fight of his life time. He was skilled, had good foot and hand speed, great body punching and Ko ability and a good chin. And had balls of steel. The mental matched the physical.
