  • My thoughts on Julio Cesar Chavez's ability.

I think JCC is very underrated on this website. You guys say his chin was his best asset. Yes, he did have a great chin but his defense is so, so, so underrated. Think about it, his chin would have to be steel to fight 115 fights in his career and still be normal mentally. He still has good memory, doesn't slur or utter in his speech so that just shows you that he had very good defense. Your chin would have to be made out of steel to have 115 fights and still be normal at the end. That to me, is just having great defense.

Yes, he wasn't flashy like a Mayweather or a SRL but he knew what he was doing. Moved his head well, parried shots with his gloves, great combination punching, great power (one of the best straight right hands I've seen in this business), great heart, great defnese, and great pressure. Overall, he has to be one of the most complete fighters of all time.

I certainly don't think his defense is underrated: We know he had a great chin because he sponged punches in every fight. That's hardly a trait of someone who had a "great defense". Was he a great in-fighter and body puncher? Of course! That and is unyielding determination was what made him a great fighter. A great defensive fighter? No way. He certainly wasn't in the same league as, say, a Duran when it came to defensive skills.

I halfway agree. He had "good" defense, not "great" defense. He wouldn't make you swing and miss like Pernell Whitaker or Dwight Muhammad Qawi. But he could slip punches pretty well and was good at turning the brunt of the impact. But I agree with Poet that his best assets were his cast iron chin and awesome infighting ability. Duran, certainly, was more complete, as were Barrera, Robinson, et. etc.

He was one of the greats. No one can dispute that. Speed, skill, power, could box, could brawl....ok defense, not great. He still did get hit quite a lot but not as much as people make out.

people who call Chavez a 'face first brawler' are flat out wrong. He was very good defensively, although I would not go as far as to say that he was one of the best ever defensively.

The thing is that he could come forward and still not get hit often: thats much harder than it might sound. its much easier to avoid punches when you fight on the backfoot and use your legs.

The biggest thing that people ignore is Chavez's combination punching. He was one of the best EVER at that. the way he could mix up his punches around the opponents guard and from the head to the body...that right there is beautiful stuff.
Not the best handspeed, but man...his variety and placement of punches was superb.
