One of the earliest boxing books I've ever read was called Boxiana by Pierce Egan, published in the 1800s. It was full of tales and fight reports about the likes of the Cribbs and Mendozas.

    Now thats boxing history!

As for your list, I'd agree with many there. There is a heavyweight bias, but I'm not going to pretend that I wouldn't fall into a very similar list.

For instance, Dempsey was certainly a bigger celebrity than a guy like Harry Greb, but I'd rank Greb higher than Dempsey in terms of ability and resume. I'd put Henry Armstrong in the 1930s over Joe Louis, again, if we're talking about ability and not celebrity. Ditto for Pernell Whitaker as figher of the 80s over Leonard.
Sure, Greb and Armstrong were outstanding fighters with accomplished records but were they pioneers like Dempsey and Louis? Their names were synonymous with boxing itself.

Leonard didn't do **** in the seventies. He was young and his one big win in 79 was against Benitez. He was an eighties man most definitely. His star was born in the 80's.

The only decade that is undisputed is the 90s with Roy Jones Jr

70s is a tie with Ali and Duran
                    80s is Leonard
                    90s is Roy Jones
00s is a tie between Hopkins and Pacman

Manny Pacquiao would be the obvious choice for 2000s with Muhammad Ali for the 1970s
