Fighters who weighed 200lbs in the 1920s-60s would today weigh 245lbs because of steroids, protein drinks, better diets etc.. it is wrong to say fighters from the past could not compete with fighters from today because they would be out-weighed by 40-50lbs

Well, I'm not so sure about that. I think it has more to do with most being out of shape or simply fat than diet, etc. Some would be bigger because the talent lacks depth and so wouldn't be as motivated to train so hard and some would be much lighter being able to get down further in weight with pre fight day weigh ins.
It's too hard to tell but I don't think they'd weigh an extra 40-50 pounds unless they were simply fat, which a lot are to be honest.

some one like max bear's chest was only a half an inch smaller then wlads with a 2 inch + longer reach while only being 210 lbs.
the diffrence between modern heavies and heavies of the past are giant biceps (wlad at 18 louis at 15), giant forearms (wlad at 17 1/2 louis at 12), giant chest muscles that only allow the chest to expand a few inches (wlad 47-48 exp bear 44-47.5 exp sullivan 43-48 exp) . if a past boxer wanted so much useless muscle im sure they would of had it regardless of the lack of protien and steroids.Last edited by Spartacus Sully; 09-18-2010, 01:00 AM.

Well I dont know about that. The male average height has increased somewhat and with that the average weight.
This is just facts that makes it hard to compare fighters from different timeperiods. Specifically HW's. The way I see it comparisons should be made how HW's of today fares against todays other HW's. And likewise for HWs of the past. It's difficult for me to explain as english isnt my first language, but this weight issue has been taken too far IMO. The HW's from different timeperiods should, as far as weight goes, be judged on weight relative to the weight of their contemporaries. I'm quite sure that the average HW today is significantly taller and heavier than the fighters of 100 years ago.
I hope this makes sense.

A guy like Louis would be flabby as hell and simply wouldn't be as effetive if he were that weight.I don't believe that being 200 pounds would stop small heavyweights like Louis from competing in todays era.Other than the Klitschko's,there aren't any genuinely good super heavyweights out there.
I see a small heavyweight like Chris Byrd giving Louis a tougher fight than the nearly of these super heavyweights.

An old Louis looked pretty solid if slower at 230 lbs but he would be a slob at 250, as are most heavyweights not named Klitschko or Lewis.
Most heavyweights today still weigh around 220-230, and many of them could stand to lose some weight.
